 Why I’m a Digital Artist

I am happy to say that digital art is my home. I only need very few supplies that can last for many years before needing to be replaced, and there are unlimited colors at my disposal. But traditional mediums have existed for hundreds of years. They have advantages over digital art that would make them objectively the superior choice.

I could be using watercolors, colored pencils, even charcoal is an option! So, why is digital art my medium of choice out of hundreds of others? What makes digital art so great, even in the rise of generative AI?

Costs

One perk digital art holds over traditional mediums is the costs. While the upfront costs for a computer and drawing tablet can be steep, these tools can be used for years on end. They are supplies that won’t go dry or run out. But pencils run short, tubes of paint only have so much, and they would not last nearly as long for someone who is constantly using them.

On the other hand, any further expenses are completely optional once you get a device and a mouse. Many amazing pieces were made without a drawing tablet, and there are plenty of great free programs that have all the features you need to make amazing pieces. However, the paid for programs are often going to be better with more features, allowing for more pizazz in whatever you make.

Unlimited colors

While you can mix paints and have a vast array of colored pencils, digital art makes having a large variety of colors easy. You have access to the rainbow and beyond with just the click of a button. Meanwhile, with paints, you have to mix the right amount of the correct colors in a precise way. With colored pencils, you are more or less stuck with what you have.

This unique perk of digital art removes constraints and limitations you may otherwise have. Which, depending on who you are, it is a great thing that unlocks bounds of creativity. It allows ideas that might die otherwise to come alive.

But keep in mind that having limited colors to work with may be better for some people. It depends on who you are and how you create. While creativity can thrive in liberty, it can also come about from the challenges that come with limitations.

Space

The final factor that makes digital art my medium of choice is space. Traditional artists have a plague when it comes to their finished works, and it is in where to store it. Many homes and studios alike are flooded with hoards of creations either for the artist themselves to enjoy alone, or waiting for a new forever home in exchange for profit.

But thanks to digital art all taking place in the device of your choice, that is not as much of a concern. While storage space on devices is limited, a decent device will be able to hold many more pieces than a home or studio can hold canvases.

Conclusion

All in all, digital is a wonderful medium. It has many features and perks to it that traditional mediums simply don’t have. However, whether digital works for you depends on who you are and your preferences. It is always a good idea to experiment with art and see what you like best. One thing that works for someone else may not work for you.
