Top Five Tricks to Preventing Creative Burnout
Top Five Tricks to Preventing Creative Burnout
So, oftentimes, your creativity needs a refresh. There is no shame in your sense of creativity being limited. You're a human, at the end of the day. There is only so much you can do before you crash and find yourself in a hole that is difficult to climb out of.
Do a variety of activities
The best thing you can do is to do literally anything else. In fact, do a lot of anything elses. There is an entire world's worth of activities you can do, many of them being great for your own care. Taking care of your home alone is plenty to give your mind and body something else to focus on that is not the same ol' same old.
Even pursuing a different creative activity is plenty to refresh your mind for what you normally do. It's enough if you need to take a break from the regular routine and, well, do literally anything else.
I made a blog post all about some new activities you can try. Say, one of the points in the linked article is familiar to a future one here! https://dextiveblog.blogspot.com/2026/01/coolest-ways-to-spend-your-time.html
Rest Your Brain
You can do nothing as well. Staring at a wall or just generally taking the brain equivalent of a vacation are fine as well. Just simply being in the moment and grounding yourself to the small parts of your life can help re-center your sense of self and look inward for inspiration.
Learn a New skill
Your art is informed by what you know. If your knowledge stays static, then your creations will grow stale and formulaic. Learning new things is the only way you can keep your works fresh and your ideas exciting, especially in the long term.
I understand if you may be hesitant on learning a new skill. Practicing can be a pain at times. Don't worry, I'm right there with you! Here is how I cope with the growing pains: https://dextiveblog.blogspot.com/2026/04/practicing-can-be-butt-at-times.html
Experience Something New
If you have the privilege to travel, then that is one of the best possible things you can do for your art. If not, then going to your local museums, aquariums, and other forms of outings are great as well. If the brain can't make new things out of nowhere, then memories and experiences are the blood of imagination. Living your life as a hermit is hurting your art, and it may be a part of why you're struggling with creation.
Consume More Art
Read books, watch movies, overanalyze illustrations, listen to music. The more art you consume, the more art you can create. You can't pour from an empty cup, and your creative cup needs to be refilled regularly. The brain is incapable of pulling things from thin air. It plagiarizes and steals from things it already knows and experienced all the time.
So, if you find creating to be a struggle, then play some video games. You get to do something that is a waste of time for most people, and it would be productive for you. There is a fine line between consuming productively and procrastinating from creating, so keep mindful of what that line may look like for you.
If you're looking for new art to consume, then look forward to my comic Our Home; Eternal. For more information on the comic, I made a post all about introducing it: https://dextiveblog.blogspot.com/2026/02/introducing-my-webcomic-project-our.html
Conclusion
No matter how you try to refresh your creation, the ultimate thing you can do is to take care of yourself. Your care comes before your creations, as your creations rely on your care. You deserve rest and to keep the act of creation enjoyable for yourself. There is no minimum of how many words you should write or how many illustrations you should draw in order to take a day or while off from it.
Even while you take a break, creation is still a beneficial thing to do. Resting and taking care of yourself does not mean you should "give up" or whatever. Read here to see what benefits you get from creating: https://dextiveblog.blogspot.com/2026/01/the-benefits-of-creating-things.html
